Preface

Kashin-Beck disease（KBD）is a kind of endemic，multiple，and deformation osteoarthropathy that usually occurs in childhood.Its clinical manifestations include pain，thickening，deformation，limited movement，muscle atrophy，short fingers，short limbs，or even short stature.KBD is mainly distributed in a narrow region from northeast to southwest of China，involving Hebei，Shanxi，Nei Mongol，Liaoning，Jilin，Heilongjiang，Shandong，Henan，Sichuan，Xizang，Shaanxi，Gansu，Qinghai，provinces（Zizhiqu）.Although it has been discovered for more than 170 years，the preventions and treatments of KBD started from the founding of the People's Republic of China.In the past 70 years，the prevention and treatment of KBD in China have never been interrupted，and all the aspects of the prevention and treatment work have achieved certain results，which included finding the cause of KBD and clarifying the course of epidemic，determining the control and prevention measures and implementing the plans，and finally carrying out comprehensive prevention and control effect evaluation.

The national KBD surveillance motion was proposed by Professor Jianbo Yang at the“National Symposium on Kashin-Beck Disease Diagnosis and Surveillance”held in Harbin，Heilongjiang Province in July 1989.Professor Yang expounded on the importance and significance of disease surveillance.Subsequently，the national KBD surveillance program was formulated by the KBD Control and Prevention Institute of the former China Center for Endemic Disease Prevention and Research.In March 1990，the Department of Endemic Disease of the former Ministry of Health held the“National Training Course on Kashin-Beck Disease Surveillance Technology”in Chengde City，Hebei Province.At the meeting，the“National Endemic Disease Surveillance Program”was issued，and the surveillance work of KBD in China began to start.The National Health Commission（former Ministry of Health）was responsible for the organization and leadership of the surveillance work.The Institute of Kashin-Beck Disease of the National Center for Endemic Disease is responsible for organizing，implementing and guiding the surveillance work of KBD in all provinces of China.The provincial，municipal and county-level health commission（former Department of Health）and Centers for Disease Control（Institute of Endemic Disease）perform their respective duties，including county surveillance program development，organization and implementation，data collection and analysis.and other work.

From Fixed-point and Moving-point to now，KBD surveillance has gone through five stages with a history of nearly 30 years.Through the surveillance of KBD，a great number of valuable information，data，and results were obtained，which provided an important scientific basis for government departments at all levels to formulate the prevention and control plan and implement the prevention and control measures of KBD.The success of national KBD surveillance is unprecedented and hard-earned in the history of KBD research in terms of its time and space coverage.The main reasons for this achievement are as follows.First，national planning and investment in human and financial resources are the basic conditions.Without this support，not to mention success，it may not be possible to start.Second，making full use of the research results of KBD to meet the requirements of scientific，simple，and feasible surveillance，is also an important condition for success.In fact，not all diseases can be effectively monitored.Third，the hardworking，active participation，and professionalism of endemic disease prevention and control professionals also play an important role in promoting success.

The main purpose of organizing the compilation of the“2008-2017 National Kashin-Beck Disease Surveillance Report Collection”was to record the national surveillance data of KBD and to save the surveillance data of KBD in various provinces.As well as to remember the history of KBD surveillance that can no longer be copied，and provide scientific bases for the next step of surveillance work and the formulation and adjustment of prevention and control strategies.
